Thursday, April 28, 2005due dateIncidentally, today was Uma's due date. We're quite happy to have gotten her happy and healthy 15 days early. It was an early and significant reminder to us of the limits of our knowledge and control over the future.

the second appointment
Today was our second appointment at the pediatrician. It was mostly uneventful. Uma was 6 lbs. 9.6 oz at birth and also at the first appointment 9 days ago. Newborns generally lose weight immediately after birth and then regain it within two weeks, generally gaining about 4-8 oz per week. Uma's been chubbing up, so we were expecting her to clear 7 lbs. We were surprised and pleased to discover she's bulked up to 7 lbs. 7oz. That's 13oz. in just 9 days. My girl's a champion nurser, she is.Labels: words
cutting the cord...
In new news, Uma shed her umbilical cord in the night. I have to cop to wiggling it a little bit yesterday evening, just to see... She has a belly button now.Labels: words
First doctor's appointment
Uma's first doctor's appointment was good. She looked a little jaundiced, but that's fading. Her heart rate and breathing were good. We were pleased (and a little surprised) to discover that she has already gained back the weight she lost after birth; she weighed in at almost exactly her birth weight. She's a good little nurser. We did have a little problem when she pooped in her carrier and it leaked out... Had to call ahead and tell them we'd be late. That's my stinker.Labels: words
