Thursday, October 20, 2005hulk SMASHUma wants you to look at this picture of Caroline. Caroline is 2 months younger than Uma, but she's now a good 18 pounds compared to Uma's 15 or 16 pounds. I like the look of fear on Sophie's face with Caroline's massive paw on her.*

Tuesday, October 18, 2005bananananananananananaMiss Uma has woken up at exactly 4:45am four days in a row, ravenously hungry. At some point, we started to think something was up (although there was a complicating factor). One of the signs that a baby is ready for solid foods is that she adds another feeding. Since she's now 6 months old, we thought we'd give it a whirl. This morning, Uma got some mashed up banana on Mommy's finger. We think she liked it, given how she lunged and grabbed for her finger, but she does that even when there's no banana on it, so it's hard to say. Regardless, we're going to keep trying. Uma needs her nutrition to keep growing.

Sunday, October 16, 2005a lesson learnedA week or so ago, Uma and I "snuck up" on Mommy. I said "boo!" Mommy turned around with a startled expression on her face. Then Uma cried. Oops. Note to self: no more sad Mommy faces.

Tuesday, October 11, 2005progress reportSo... what has Miss Uma been up to lately? Well, she likes making what I call "baby dinosaur" noises. They're kind of weird, croaking sounds. It's kind of funny. She's been making "bbbvvvv" noises for a while also. This morning, she did "fff." And, of course, we still have the classics of "aaaaaaaaa" and "ooooooaaaaoooo" on heavy rotation.
She's still enamored with her feet, of course. Who wouldn't be? They're so cute. I tried to get a shot of her in the bath pulling her foot up right to her face and staring at it cross-eyed, but once we pulled out the camera, she stopped what she was doing and stared right at it. That girl's a little too smart sometimes.
Her hands are fast and graspy these days. My glasses are a tempting target, as is Mommy's hair. Her coordination is pretty good when it comes to grabbing her toys as well. And, of course, once she has them, it's straight to the mouth. Uma's coordinated enough to grab them, but not enough to hang on to them. The way she whips those stuffed animals around (especially her duck), it's inevitable they'll go flying out of her reach. She's gotten enough awareness and memory that she gets mad when she loses a toy, and demands that they be returned to her.
She's also fascinated by the dogs. She'll stare at them when they come near (but not too near... and no licking!). Sometimes, she'll smile and laugh just at the sight of them. This morning, she was also intrigued by our refrigerator door. I guess all the things we have on it are magnetic.
Her sitting up is much stronger now than it used to be. She doesn't quite have the back strength to completely support herself, but it's only a matter of time. I predict she'll be sitting up by Thanksgiving.
Uma's generally happy as well, with her solid and regular sleep. It's surprising what she can sleep through (though not consistently). Roofing, for example. Or early morning dog barking right outside her door. Her exuberance has taken a slightly more dangerous turn, however, as partly evinced by her flip. She's started doing a bucking bronco move, where she'll try to jack-knife her body at the waist. When she's on the floor, I worry about her bonking her head. She also does it when she's being held; she clocked me hard in the cheekbone the other day. She herself wasn't hurt, so I guess that's all right. Jessica gets hit more than I do. Maybe we should consider a helmet, if not to protect Uma, then to protect ourselves.
When Uma isn't bucking, rolling over, abusing her toys, etc., she likes to lie on her stomach and kick her feet. Give that girl a kickboard, put her in a pool, and she'll motor right across. She's also been propping herself up on her arms (picture pending). She can raise herself up pretty high. Between the kicking and raising herself up, it's inevitable that she's going to figure out how to bend her legs the right way, and then she'll be mobile.Labels: words

Hoo boy. This sure is something. I dunno if I can handle it all. I'll give a solid try, though, because Grandma was so nice to get it for me.
