Tuesday, February 28, 2006she did it!With some possibly unethical persuasion*, Uma crawled forward over a foot at least 4 times. Just in time; I promised February, and I had to deliver. One time she crawled with her right leg extended, the others were on both knees.
* dangling the TV remote and Daddy's glasses just out of reach
Also, she slept through the night again. It's been about 50/50 lately, with the outcome being some complex calculus of temperature, humidity, noise, hunger, and other variables we have yet to identify. We'll get there.Labels: words

Friday, February 24, 2006twoferShe did it again! Uma slept through the night... ish. She woke up angry about an hour after going down for the night, but I don't count that against her; we weren't asleep yet, after all. Sometime around 4am, she started making noise, but she didn't need anyone to soothe her back to sleep. She wasn't even very hungry when she woke up for the day.
Uma's pre-bed playtime last night was exciting. She crawled backwards a few steps (I didn't say she'd crawl forward this month, did I?) more than once. It was a little funny and a little sad: she'd see something out of her reach that she wanted. She knew she needed to move somehow, but it kept moving further away. She also moved from lying down to sitting up at least five times. Finally, she was able to repeatedly pull herself up into an unstable standing position from sitting on my lap. Uma's definitely getting an inkling, so it won't be long.
Also, if Uma ever plays soccer, I'm sure she'll be a goalie. She's gotten very, very good at defending her face from our assaults with the washcloth.Labels: words

Tuesday, February 21, 2006baby stepsI never realized how many stages there were before actual crawling until I saw Uma hit every one of those milestones over the last few months. There's the hands and knees position. Then there's rocking, switching from sitting up to hands and knees, moving both legs together, moving the legs separately, balancing on one hand while the other grabs Daddy's glasses, scooting, and the occasional brief crawl backwards. I had a serious discussion with Uma about how her Daddy's credibility will be damaged if she doesn't crawl this month, a charge she vigorously rejected in her terse and sternly worded statement, "vuh."

Monday, February 13, 200610 monthsOur little girl turned 10 months old today. So long and so short. In that time, I have taken over 3,000 photographs of her, of which just over 650 have shown up on this site. Wow.

Saturday, February 11, 2006sitting upYesterday, Uma was rolling around on the floor and managed to roll herself up into a seated position. I don't think she realized what she had done, and I'm sure it was unintentional, but we know she can do it now.

Friday, February 03, 2006up but not overUma's getting increasingly good at propping herself up on hands and knees. She's strong enough and coordinated enough to crawl, but it just doesn't seem to have occurred to her that she can. It's only a matter of time, now.

Thursday, February 02, 2006I salute youWhen Uma sees a mirror, she will now raise a single hand in a half-wave, half-salute to her dear friend Amu who lives on the other side. Last night, she woke up angry at about 11pm. I took her into the bathroom to get something, and, mad and sad as she was, she raised her hand in a solemn salute to herself.
A valuable skill that Uma has picked up in the last month or so is clicking her tongue. I shall have to find a Khoisan speaker so I can find out what we're saying.
Ordinary household objects that have become treasured toys:- Metal and wooden spoons
- Wire whisk
- Boxes
- Laundry baskets
- Pressing ham
- Plastic containers (and lids)
- Expired credit card (maybe just because she doesn't know it's expired)
- CD jewel case
- Baby body wash bottle (empty)
- Combs and brushes
- The cotton pads we (try to) put under her during naked time
- A sock
- A robe belt
- Washcloths
And many more.Labels: words

Evie comes to play
Uma and Evie play together so nicely.
Sometimes....
They share everything... like noses.
and again!
Uma slept through the night again. As of right now, she has stirred and made noise, but isn't obviously awake and (more importantly) has not demanded our attention. Of course, I'm used to her waking up, so when she doesn't, I actually wake up more than if she just wakes up her normal once. No doubt that will continue to be the case until she's consistent again.Labels: words
Uma gets gifts on valentine's day, too
Reading the Valentine's Day card from Grandpa.
So, Daddy... where are the gifts you got me?
Oh... I see. I'm gonna read this book now. You know, the one my Grandpa sent me.
wonder of wonders
Uma slept through the night! Sure, she made noise a couple of times, but she never needed soothing or nursing. It might just be a fluke, but this is the first time she's slept through the night in 4 months. We'll take it.Labels: words
