Sunday, June 25, 2006turn the seat aroundThey say you have to wait until a baby is 12 months old and 20 lbs. to face forward in a car seat. There's something about development of neck strength. We figured that 14 months and ~19 lbs. was close enough, so we flipped her around yesterday. She's not too impressed. Oh well.

Saturday, June 24, 2006Eureka!While Ketan and I have been excited about Uma's first unsupported steps this week, Uma has seemed mostly oblivious to the fact that she can now, ever so briefly, walk. She has been so focused on whatever she was going after that she appears not to have noticed how she got there. Until today that is. This morning she realized that she can now get around in a new way, and she is delighted about it. She has been practicing a lot, and in the span of just one day has noticeably improved. She is now steadier and has walked as many as seventeen steps in a row.

Friday, June 23, 2006On the MoveThis morning Uma took five steps in a row. She was standing and saw her sippy cup on the floor a couple feet away. Rather than get down on all fours, she toddled over.

Thursday, June 22, 2006the hits keep comingYesterday morning, I discovered the pointy tips of a molar on the lower right side of Uma's mouth. That makes 4 molars, and something like 14 teeth total. Yowza.

Sunday, June 18, 2006yet another toothI found another tooth on Uma's top right. It's either a premolar or a full molar. The budding canine still hasn't poked through. Most of the remaining new teeth are slowly making their way out. This makes I think 13 teeth total.

Tuesday, June 13, 200614 monthsUma hit 14 months today. She's progressing rapidly. She can easily walk balancing herself on furniture. She also really enjoys walking with her hands held up. She can stand for increasingly long without support, up to 10 seconds at a time. She took a step that way just recently, but it doesn't qualify as walking.
She has also learned how to say a few more words. "Squirrel" she says "querr," for instance. "Daddy" is still not an important word, though; she greeted me on my return from work tonight with a clear and enthusiastic "Mama!" I started teaching her some signs at the beginning of the month as well. She knows the sign for "dog" really well and does it a lot, often doing it after seeing dogs (or pictures) we didn't even know were there. She knows the sign for "more" and can do it, but she hasn't known what it means, though today she might have gotten it. She knows the sign for "drink," and she takes a swig when I do it, but she doesn't do it herself. There are a handful (haha) of other signs we're going to try to teach her.
Uma's canine still hasn't popped out. It was bothering her this past weekend. I think what I called a premolar before might be a full molar; I saw at least four cusps on it. The teeth are slowly coming in, and she seems to be figuring out what to do with them. It's getting harder and harder to peek in to see more, though; she no likey.Labels: words

Uma goes fishing
Oooh... let's see what's up here.
A coaster. Hmmph. I think I'll throw this one back.
This picture was at least an hour and a half after Uma got the balloon, and she hadn't let go of it once.
Princess Uma displays her symbols of rank, her royal scepter and her, um, royal duck.
Also her (new) royal carriage, and her royal UV-blocking-shirt-with-a-fish-on-it.
Uma let the hat stay on just barely long enough to take a picture. I guess she doesn't want hat head.
Uma sorts Daddy's laundry: that goes on the floor, that goes on the floor, that goes on the floor...
