Sunday, March 29, 2009New house requirements"Can we keep our backyard when we move to the new house?"
"When we move to a new house, we should definitely have one with a playset.... but we can't take Evie's!"
No move is imminent, we've just been talking about what we want. And Uma has been listening, and thinking about what she wants.Labels: quotes

Friday, March 13, 2009Not as funny as I thoughtUma: I don't like your funny voices.
Me: You don't think they're funny? They don't make you laugh?
Uma: They make me feel like I want to cry.Labels: quotes

Wednesday, March 04, 2009Tell Me What I Want, What I Really, Really WantThe following was an exchange between Uma and me this morning:
"Mommy, can you help me with something?"
"What do you need help with?"
"I don't remember, Mommy. Can you tell me what it is?"
"Um...I don't know. What were you having trouble with?"
"You do know, Mommy, you do! Tell me! TELL ME!"
"Uma, I'm not going to talk to you if you yell at me like that."
"Think, Mommy, think! What is it?" [I swear I'm quoting her verbatim here.]
[I ignore her as she rages on for a couple minutes.]
[Uma suddenly switches to a pleasant voice.] "Oh, I remember. My yellow flower came off the construction paper. Will you get the glue stick for me?" -

No doubt about to ask: "When will I be this tall?"
One of her favorite questions, up there with "When will I be X years old?"
Uma Gets Her Culture On
On Friday, Uma attended her first show. It was a short opera piece at UT called La Curandera that my friend Lisa was in. Uma was excited and a little overwhelmed. Even though I explained to her what would happen beforehand, she was a little scared when the house lights dimmed and the orchestra began playing. She relaxed when the singers came on the stage and was thrilled when Lisa made her entrance. Lisa played a jealous fiancee, and Uma started to get upset when she thought Lisa was really angry. My assurances that Lisa and the other singers were just pretending calmed her down, though, and she seemed to enjoy the rest of the show.
